- "There's nothing to be gained by second-guessing yourself. You can't remake the past, so look ahead... or risk being left behind."
- —Vala Mal Doran
Vala Mal Doran is a thief and con artist, smuggler, former Goa'uld host, and member of SG-1. Having lived most of her life a slave to the symbiote Qetesh, Vala was forced to make a living through pirating and gunrunning, only reforming her ways after a chance encounter with the Earth ship Prometheus. Brash and extremely self-confident, she has proven herself a valuable ally and resourceful adversary, but is often torn between her past and future selves.
Leading the Lucian Alliance for decades, Vala had left her husband and cut ties with her allies on Earth by 2063. Her participation in a top-secret project headed by Samantha Carter, however, suggested she may soon return to prominence in galactic affairs at large.
Much of Vala's early life is unknown, given her being born offworld. She was raised by her father and stepmother, Adria, on an unidentified planet in the Milky Way Galaxy. At some point, she was taken as a host to the Goa'uld Qetesh and was forced to commit terrible atrocities in her name. Eventually, Vala was freed from her enslavement when a Tok'ra incited a rebellion and removed Qetesh from her body. But with no allies to turn to and a people that feared her because of what she once was, Vala was forced to flee. Taking up a career as a pirate and con artist to survive, she was eventually lead into the employ of the Lucian Alliance.
